Hal Yoh, CEO, Day & Zimmerman mentioned this catchy phrase during a recent CEO roundtable. It's simple but speaks volumes about successful growth strategies for both companies and individuals.
It confirms what we've been saying for years; that instead of
trying to fit in it's better to
create your own fit where you can create a
just me versus me too perception with your customers and prospects.
Optimal performance and recognition comes from differentiating - standing o…

I've been actively working and building a Twitter presence over the last few weeks. Interesting how you meet all kinds of people and find out lots of information. A great way to stay on top of current events.
The more important realization to me is how Twitter can be helpful to those leaders and well known people who may be feel isolated in their roles. I've always said the the CEO or celebrity can often be the loneliest person in a room full of people. Everyone expects you to know the answers.…

Jonathan - I'd admire your ability to stay focused on growth and the future. And your passion and excitement for your new product.
Not a strategy that many leaders take during these tough times. It's easy to get paralyzed especially when you're in a high profile role where others try to earn points by knocking you down. Long-term you will win this way.
I dwell in the personal side of leadership and like to observe, support others who are striving forward despite the obstacles. There's lessons…

An important comment for all of us from a successful woman executive - Should you try to tweak yourself to fit in or should you be your self and find the place where that's valued? No right or wrong answer. I just think for maximum performance, happiness and to feel successful, you have to be your true self and find the right place for you. It gives you the most power, energy, confidence and best chances for success.
I was at my best in a macho (aka fraternity-like) setting where I could pal…

No not that one. The "F" word I mean is "Feminine". Should we treat it the same way as the real "F" word? Or as just one of many attributes of certain types of successful female leaders?
This conflict occurred as I tried to describe the attributes of successful leaders that I work with during a TV interview. The word came out and the host immediately jumped on me. I was waffling and trying to explain the right context when time ran out.
I was thinking of some who project a very feminine style…

Not that you should have a wild streak but that you should let your instincts for growth and improvement drive you forward. Too many of us spend our lives focused on what others expect or want from us. Women have it even harder because of gender-based stereotypes of how they should act and what they should do.
In reality, our instincts for survival and actualization (Maslow) are very strong. But it takes courage to move out from behind this wall of expectations. We have lots of "stuff" jobs, re…

It's the end of March and a good time for CEOs, business owners, entrepreneurs and executives to assess their performance and expectations for 2009. Are your new year's resolutions still in force? Is your cautious optimism in January going to be matched by reality this coming December? Is the economy driving you crazy? Do you want to leapfrog your competition?
It's impossible to predict, let alone control the future. But you certainly can get ready to meet your long-term goals while planning fo…

We had a great turnout of 20+ women CEOs, business owners and executives at the event today at Glaxo. Some observations from the interactions;
- Women can and do want to help each other
- over 60% of the women have their husbands do the food shopping
- They really care about their employees
- They are often too tough on themselves. Too focused on being perfect
- They are not afraid of honest and authentic conversations
- They're still focused on growth and improvement of their businesses
- They…

You've heard the characterizations - they're selfish, too bitchy, and uninterested in helping other women. But does this perception equal reality?
Not according to Professor Linda Carli, co-author of the book "Through the Labyrinth", who states "women are often blamed for other women's lack of success, even though women, on average, are more helpful then men."
And shouldn't we admire women who have navigated their way to success? So why do they get this bum rap? Because of differences in perce…

Are you judged by your talents? Do you have to be nice? Do nice girls finish last or first?
I'm not talking about politics here. This is an illustration of a woman who is navigating through a labyrinth of challenges and opportunities to reach the top. Hillary Clinton and many other successful women have proven the glass ceiling has broken. However, it's not a simple path, but a labyrinth of choices, decisions and opportunities that each woman must choose to reach success.
By most measures, Hil…
